What to Carry in Your Rucksack

A well-packed rucksack is your mobile base camp. Essentials depend on adventure type, weather, and personal preference. Start with the basics and upgrade as your love for the outdoors grows.

Essentials include:

Navigation & Timing: Map, compass, timing cards, route card, watch, notebook & pencil. Practice reading maps before heading out. Navigation Courses & Safe Navigation tips

Communication & Safety: Mobile phone (fully charged), Garmin InReach or satellite devices, lightweight power bank, head torch, whistle, first aid kit.

Food & Hydration: Water (1.5–2 L+), hot drinks (tea, coffee, Vimto), snacks (slow & fast-release, Jelly Babies, energy bars, homemade sandwiches), freeze-dried meals, sun protection.

Footwear & Clothing: Hiking boots or approach shoes, layered clothing, waterproof jacket & trousers, spare warm layer, hat, gloves, sunglasses. Train with the gear you’ll actually use.
